Editorial Independence Policy

1. Purpose
Pearl Street Studio is organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its mission is to advance education, workforce development, and informed dialogue within the electricity and energy industries.
This Editorial Independence Policy establishes principles to ensure that all educational content, publications, media programming, and research activities remain independent, objective, and free from improper influence.
2. Scope
This Policy applies to:
- Courses and lecture materials
- Podcasts and interviews
- Live events and webinars
- Articles and opinion-pieces
- Book, textbook, and white-paper reviews
- Educational tools and digital content
- Institutional collaborations, otherwise known as partnerships
- Public communications relating to educational programming
- Research summaries and publications
- Sponsored initiatives
This Policy applies to directors, officers, employees, volunteers, contributors, contractors, and partners involved in content creation or oversight.
3. Core Principles
Pearl Street Studio is committed to:
- Academic & Scientific Integrity
Content will be developed based on good-faith research, professional standards, and intellectual rigor.
- Editorial Control
Pearl Street Studio retains sole authority over content topics, selection of speakers and contributors, editorial framing and conclusions, publication timing and format, and inclusion or exclusion of materials.
- Nonpartisanship
As a 501(c)(3) organization, Pearl Street Studio does not endorse political candidates or parties. Programming shall not constitute partisan campaign activity and policy discussions will be conducted in an educational, analytical manner.
- Transparency
Sponsorships and material collaborations will be disclosed where appropriate and practicable.
- Freedom from Undue Influence
Financial contributors, sponsors, institutional partners, and donors shall not control editorial content.
4. Sponsorship and Funding Safeguards
To preserve independence:
- Sponsors may receive acknowledgment but shall not dictate educational content.
- Sponsorship agreements shall not provide content approval rights.
- Financial contributions do not entitle donors to influence content development.
- Pearl Street Studio may decline funding that would compromise its mission or independence.
The nature and extent of any disclosure will be determined based on factors such as the level of support provided, the degree of involvement in the program, and the potential for perceived influence. If funding relates to a specific program, Pearl Street Studio retains full editorial authority.
5. Institutional Partnerships
When collaborating with universities, research labs, or other institutions:
- Joint projects will clearly define intellectual property and editorial control.
- Pearl Street Studio retains control over its independently produced materials.
- Co-branded materials will accurately reflect the nature of collaboration.
- Participation by public officials does not imply endorsement by their agencies.
Where appropriate, disclaimers will clarify that views expressed are those of individual speakers.
6. Contributor Independence
Part of Pearl Street Studio’s mission is to support open dialogue across differing viewpoints on topics within the electricity industry by working with volunteers, contributors, speakers, and authors with different perspectives and backgrounds.
Volunteers, contributors, speakers, and authors:
- Are expected to act in good faith with respect to the accuracy of their statements;
- May express professional viewpoints within the educational scope of programming;
- Do not speak on behalf of Pearl Street Studio unless expressly authorized.
- Represent their own views, or those of their affiliated institution or employer, when sharing viewpoints. Such views do not necessarily reflect those of Pearl Street Studio.
Pearl Street Studio reserves the right to:
- Edit content for clarity and educational quality;
- Decline publication of material inconsistent with its mission;
- Remove content that is misleading, unlawful, or inconsistent with nonprofit obligations; and
- Request contributors disclose relevant conflicts of interest where appropriate.
7. Political Activity Restrictions
Consistent with federal tax law governing charitable organizations under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code:
- Pearl Street Studio shall not participate or intervene in political campaigns.
- Programming shall not promote or oppose candidates for public office.
- Educational discussion of public policy is permitted when conducted in a nonpartisan, analytical manner.
- Sponsorships shall not be used to advance partisan objectives.
8. Public Trust and Corrections
Pearl Street Studio values credibility and public trust.
If errors are identified:
- Corrections may be issued where appropriate.
- Content may be clarified or updated.
- Significant revisions may be noted transparently.

9. Commitment to Scientific Integrity and Protection from Undue Influence
Pearl Street Studio is committed to promoting rigorous, evidence-based education in the electricity and energy sectors. Programming frequently engages topics related to engineering systems, environmental impacts, grid reliability, and market design, including issues connected to climate science.
To safeguard the integrity of the educational mission of the organization:
- Pearl Street Studio will not permit contributors or partners to suppress, distort, or materially misrepresent credible scientific research in connection with our programming.
- Pearl Street Studio will not accept editorial direction that seeks to:
- Conceal or selectively omit established scientific findings in a misleading manner;
- Discredit peer-reviewed research without good-faith scholarly basis;
- Undermine scientific discourse through intimidation or bad-faith tactics;
- Pressure contributors or speakers to alter conclusions for non-academic or non-educational reasons.
- Pearl Street Studio reserves the right to decline partnerships or funding relationships where credible, good-faith evidence indicates a pattern of conduct inconsistent with scientific integrity or engagement in public discourse.
- This commitment is not intended to promote any particular regulatory outcome, political platform, or policy position. Rather, it reflects Pearl Street Studio’s dedication to:
- Intellectual honesty;
- Good-faith academic inquiry;
- Respect for credible scientific research;
- Responsible educational dialogue.
Editorial decisions shall be guided by professional standards, documented research, and mission alignment — not by financial, political, or reputational pressure. Pearl Street Studio retains full editorial discretion in applying this Policy consistent with its mission and applicable laws.
